What About Same-Sex Marriage

By bro Lee Tian Seng

Same-sex marriage is legalised in many countries and many have come to accept it. Some denominational churches are in favour of it. What does Bible say about same-sex marriages? Should a Christian marry someone of the same gender?

Same-sex marriage is legalised in some countries but that does not make it right. Christians should respect the law of God over the law of the country. The Bible teaches us that we should obey God rather than man. So, even if the law of the country permits same-sex marriage, it does not make it right.

Acts 5:29 - But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: “We ought to obey God rather than men.”

What does God say about same-sex marriage? Firstly, the Bible does not authorise it. What God recognizes is marriage between a man and a woman. If otherwise, God would have mentioned so.

Matthew 19:4-5 - And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?”

Secondly, the Bible also teaches that sexual relationships between persons of the same gender is a sin. In the story of Lot in Sodom, we read that the men of the city wanted to have sexual relationship with the men who were guests in Lot’s house. The city was destroyed because of this sin.

Genesis 19:4-5 - Now before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house. And they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them carnally.”

Jude 7 - As Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire

The Bible speaks against homosexual relationships, calling such acts “vile passions” and “shameful”. How can same-sex marriage be right if sexual relationships between persons of the same gender is a sin?

Romans 1:26-27 - For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.

We can be sure that there is no place for same-sex marriage because God has not allowed it.
